Hi my name is Prentiss Haney and I am a senior at Stivers School for the Arts. Growing up as an African American male in an urban public school setting, opportunities are slim. It is true that public school funding is lacking in our country, so when opportunities arise, I take them by the horns. At Stivers we have an environmental action group called “Go Green!”, that I am a part of.  We promote recycling and other methods to make our school “green”.  Because of the total lack of funding we are completely a “grassroots” movement with no help from the city or the state. Students volunteer to sort recyclables every Wednesday and we use the science teacher’s pickup trunk to deliver them  to the recycling center. As an inspiring filmmaker, my science teacher asked me to create a video for the America’s Greenest School competition showing how we can make our school a greener place. I entered this contest with a video visually describing our vision of motion centered lighting, more recycling bins, an urban garden, and many more ideas. We poured our hearts into this video and as of March 17, we were named one of the ten finalists! But now it comes down to public voting.  If we were to win this competition, our school would win a $150,000 Hybrid Bus, $20,000 worth of Green renovations, classroom money for supplies and also scholarship money for students like me.  At americasgreenschool.com you can vote for your favorite entry.  Out of these schools, I feel that we are the most deserving. Our school district does not have enough money to even provide busing for high school students!  The raising fares of pubic transportation make it harder and harder for some students to get to school. More than one of our students has to walk miles to school each morning or share a bus pass with their parents, causing them to miss school. Winning this bus would help provide us students, regardless of our financial circumstances, with an ability to attend our school and participate in all the opportunities it provides.  Winning the scholarship money and green improvements for our school would also set an example that the rest of the district could follow.  We need your help getting the word out to vote for Stivers School for the Arts in the America’s Greenest School competition.
